Batwoman is a superhero in the DC Universe and the cousin of Batman.
Origin[]
A former soldier, Kate Kane returned home after being discharged against her desires and after turning the tables on muggers realized she could help people as a vigilante.
Biography[]
Kate Kane was the daughter of Bruce Wayne's uncle Jacob Kane. Her mother and sister were killed by terrorists while their family was on a NATO mission in Belgium. At her father's urging, Kate joined the army and quickly moved up the ranks. However when Kate's commanding officer learned that Kate was a lesbian she was discharged.
Kate returned to Gotham and began to simply live her life as a spoiled socialite, as her father got remarried to a wealthy heiress. When Kate was mugged by a criminal while leaving a party, she brutally beat the man only to be stopped by Batman. Realizing that she could be a vigilante, Kate convinced her father to help her become the Batwoman.
Batwoman's use of handguns put her at odds with Batman but she protected Gotham when Batman was presumed dead. Batwoman found herself in a battle with a Lewis Carroll-inspired supervillain known as Alice. Batwoman learned that Alice was her sister who had survived the terrorist attack but was now mentally unstable and a member of the Religion of Crime.
Over time, Batwoman became a member of the Bat-family and even was a member of the Justice League of America.
