Beast (Henry "Hank" McCoy) is a superhero in the Marvel Universe and a founding member of the X-Men.

A gifted scholar with unusually large hands and feet, Hank McCoy later learned that he was a mutant and was invited to join the X-Men to defend a world that fears and hates him as The Beast.

Early Years[]

Henry Phillip McCoy was a mutant born in Dunfee, Illinois to Norton and Edna McCoy. His mutation was brought about by his father Norton, a nuclear power plant employee who was overexposed to radiation during an accident, which altered his genes and mutated the genes of his son. While many mutant display their mutant traits or powers at puberty, Henry was born with abnormally large hands and feet that quickly signaled him out as a mutant.

As he grew, so did his mutation, which also gave him increased agility and strength. He quickly found himself being a star player in athletic events, though his abilities and mutated features soon drew ire from others, making Hank a pariah at his own school. During a game, Hank used his powers to stop a trio of robbers and ends up gaining the attention of a supervillain named the Conquistador, who abducted Hank's parents in an attempt to force him to work for him. Soon, Hank meets Professor Charles Xavier who uses his team of X-Men to defeat the Conquistador. Xavier then requests that Hank join his new school the Xavier's Institute for Gifted Youngsters, which Henry happily accepts, recognizing the kind of education the school can offer.

The X-Men[]

When Hank joined the school, he quickly becomes impressed with its resources for scientific education and the acceptance he receives from the other students: Scott Summers, Jean Grey, Bobby Drake, and Warren Worthington III. Soon, the students received an education, but also received training in combat thanks to Professor Xavier's Danger Room, a room full of traps and dangers designed to allow the young mutants to prepare for fighting and to overcome danger.  Hank indulged in his intellectual pursuits, increasing both his scientific acumen and his love of literature and he became closer to his new peers.

He was a young man a scientist, but he found out that he was a mutant and made a "cure" but instead of curing him it accelerated his mutant cells and became Beast.
