The Birds of Prey are a group of superheroines in the DC Universe.
Origin[]
When Oracle, a master of information gathering, asked for Black Canary's help with a case, the two became a duo, forming a team dedicated to helping the oppressed.
History[]
When Barbara Gordon, secretly the superheroine Batgirl, was paralyzed after an encounter with the Joker, it seemed like her superhero career had ended. However, using her keen intellect, she created a powerful information network for herself to assist other heroes and took on a new name: Oracle. One such hero was Black Canary and the two began a regular partnership when Oracle coordinated a mission to stop the criminals Nick Devine and his bodyguard Lynx (who, as it turns out, was the real brains of the operation). The two would team up again later, also assisted by antiheroes The Huntress and Catwoman to battle a mercenary named Archer Braun. Soon after, the two would team up frequently, with Black Canary acting on Oracle's intel to find and defeat villains and criminals. The team also got occasional assistance from a detective named Jason Bard, with whom Barbara had a previous romantic relationship.
Though Black Canary and Oracle worked together in many missions, they would not meet face to face until an attempt on Oracle's life by various assassins, where Canary saved Oracle's life. The Black Canary and Oracle also involved themselves into the near-fatal shooting of Jim Gordon, the commissioner of the Gotham City Police and Barbara's father. During a conflict with the villain Ra's al Ghul, Black Canary gained a superpower she once had and lost, her "Canary Cry", the ability to produce devastating sonic waves with her voice. Meanwhile, Barbara and Dick Grayson, the superhero Nightwing and a long-time crime fighting partner, end up slowly getting into a romantic relationship developing throughout her partnership with Black Canary,
While participating in the investigation in which Bruce Wayne is suspected of murder, Power Girl joined the team briefly but quit after being guilt-ridden following a mission gone wrong. During a battle against the mad genius Savant, the duo managed to survive with the help of Huntress, who had re-entered the orbit of the Birds of Prey. She eventually joined the team officially following a mission against Chesire, who teamed up with Savant.
