Blackgate Penitentiary (also called Blackgate Prison, Gotham State Penitentiary and Gotham Prison) is a prison in the DC Universe that is located in Gotham.

The details of when and how Blackgate Penitentiary were opened remain a mystery.  It was originally named Gotham State Penitentiery before being renamed Blackgate Prison.  In the late 1980s, the prison was forced to shut down after being condemned Amnesty International.  The prison as eventually re-opened under the name Blackgate Penitentiary.


During the Gotham quake, many prisoners escaped from Blackgate.
