Buttercup is the tritagonist of the superhero team The Powerpuff Girls in the animated TV series of the same name.

Buttercup is portrayed by E.G. Daily and later by Natalie Palamides.

Origin

Professor Utonium was trying to use his scientific knowledge to use sugar, spice, and everything nice to make the perfect little girl when the mysterious Chemical X was added to the formula by accident. It ended up creating Buttercup, along with her sisters Bubbles and Blossom, little girls with ultra super powers. 

History

When brilliant scientist Professor Utonium attempted to create the perfect little girl using sugar, spice, and everything nice as ingredients, his work was accidentally sabotage by Jojo, his hyper-active monkey lab assistant. The result was three little girls with ultra-super powers, who the Professor decided to act as a father to and name them Blossom (because she was the first to open up to him), Bubbles (because she was so bubbly), and Buttercup because it also started with a "b". It's arguable that the lack of meaning in her name left Buttercup with a chip on her shoulder.

Soon, the Girls were enrolled in school but gain infamy when a game of tag accidentally caused citywide destruction due to their superpowers.  In an attempt to redeem themselves, they allied themselves with Jojo, now super-intelligent and calling himself Mojo Jojo, who claimed he also felt like an outsider and together he and the girls could change their minds.
