When both brothers were asked to provide a sacrifice for God, God favored Abel's bounty, resulting in Cain to become insanely jealous and murder his brother, committing the first murder.  Both brothers ended up being cursed to live forever; Cain for his murder and Abel for, in Cain's words, being the first victim.
