Cain is a character in the DC Universe based on the biblical Cain and the keeper of the House of Mystery.
Origin[]
One of the first humans, Cain was the first to commit the act of murder on his brother Abel, due to his jealousy. As punishment, he was cursed to compulsively kill his brother forever and was given a home in the House of Mystery.
Biography[]
A long time ago, Cain and his brother, Abel, were born of the first man and woman, Adam and Eve. When both brothers were asked to provide a sacrifice for God, God favored Abel's bounty, resulting in Cain to become insanely jealous and murder his brother, committing the first murder. Both brothers ended up being cursed to live forever; Cain for his murder and Abel for, in Cain's words, being the first victim.
Cain and his brother Abel were given homes in the Dreaming by Death and Dream, two ancient entities presiding over their self named domains, as they took pity on them. Abel was given the House of Secrets, where he would tell tales of secret things, while Cain was given the House of Mystery, which would feature more enigmatic tales.
