Captain America's shield is a protective device/weapon in the Marvel Universe belonging to Captain America.
History[]
The First Shield[]
When Steve Rogers first started fighting evil as Captain America, in addition to his uniform he was given a triangular steel shield to use both for offence and defence. Captain fought with it as his primary weapon for a time, though retired it on acquiring his second shield.
The Circular Shield[]
While metallurgist Myron MacLain was trying to create an invincible armor for the United States army, he began working with a nearly invincible alloy (an early form of the super alloy adamantium) and the strange metal known as vibranium. In the middle of an experiment, MacLain fell asleep from exhaustion and for reasons not entirely known, the two metals bonded. After further tinkering, he cast the metal as a circular shield. The reasons for this are unclear, with some reports being for the versatility of the design and others that he simply used the pre-existing cast used for tank doors.
Trivia[]
In the comics, the mixture of vibranium made the shield immune to electricity and magnetism, but in adaptations it can both conduct electricity and be magnetized.
