Catwoman (Selina Kyle) is a supervillain turned superhero in the DC Universe.

Origin[]

A thief inspired by Batman, Selina Kyle became the Catwoman.

History[]

Orphaned as a child when her mother committed suicide and her father died of alcoholism, Selina was separated from her little sister and grew up in a juvenile corrections facility. Feeling as though everything in her life had been taken from her, Selina began to take whatever she wanted. She escaped her facility and joined a carnival in Gotham City, learning how to be an acrobat and a slight-of-hand magician. She employed those skills to become a skilled pickpocket and street thief. Despite her hard life and criminal nature, Selina still took time to care for the stray cats she found on the streets of Gotham, as she felt a kinship with the lost pets.

As she grew older Selina found herself working as a prostitute for a an abusive pimp and she protected the younger girls who worked for him. When she stopped him from attacking a young girl named Holly, he savagely beat Selina and she passed out due to her injuries. She awoke in a hospital and a sympathetic detective told her to meet Wildcat and learn how to fight. Selina trained with the superhero and learned to fight and to use a bullwhip, and then returned to take Holly away from their pimp. While escaping with Holly, Selina saw the Batman and decided that if he could use a costume to become a dark creature of the night, so could she. Creating a costume based on the cats she loved, Selina became Catwoman. As Catwoman, Selina began to steal whatever she wanted, becoming one of the world's greatest thieves. This eventually Batman to confront her and despite her being a criminal and he a superhero, the two began to develop feeings for each other, as they were two sides of the same coin.

Some incarnations are meta-human.
