The Lone Ranger is a pulp hero of the old west who first appeared in a radio series before expanding into pulp novels, television, film and other media.

Origin[]

The only survivor of an ambush on a gang of six Texas rangers, John Reid was rescued by the Native American Tonto and begins to seek justice anonymously for the people as The Lone Ranger.

Biography[]

John Reid's life prior to becoming the Lone Ranger is largely unknown.  What is known is that he was a skilled member of the Texas Ranger division.  Together he was riding with five other rangers (including his brother Daniel) on a mission after the criminal Bartholomew "Butch" Cavendish.  However, they were betrayed by the guide leading them, allowing Butch to get the drop on them and seemingly wipe them all out.  John managed to survive but was left for dead in the rough wilderness until he was found by a Native American named Tonto.  Tonto, in fact, saved Reid due to the fact that he recognized him as someone who had saved his own life as a younger man. Tonto saved John's life, and John vowed to avenge the death of his brother and the other Rangers by catching Butch. Reid began wearing a mask fashioned from cloth from his late brother's vest, he would not take off in public and was now known as the Lone Ranger. To continue his deception, Tonto created a fake grave for Reid, both misleading his enemies and as a metaphor for the death of the identity of "John Reid".
