The Doctor is the central character in the long-running BBC television science-fiction series Doctor Who, and has also featured in two cinema feature films, a vast range of spin-off novels, audio dramas and comic strips connected to the series. To date, eleven actors have played the role in the television series (including the 1996 television film), with these changes being explained by the ability of the character's species to regenerate. Several other actors have played the character on stage and film, in audio dramas, and in occasional special episodes of the series. The character's enduring popularity led the Daily Telegraph to dub him "Britain's favourite alien". The Doctor, in his eleventh incarnation, is currently played by Matt Smith, who took over the role from David Tennant at the end of the special The End of Time, broadcast on 1 January 2010.

Background[]

The Doctor is a Time Lord, an extraterrestrial from the planet Gallifrey, who travels through time and space in an internally vast time machine called the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space). The Doctor explores the universe at random, using his extensive knowledge of science, technology and history (from his perspective) to avert whatever crisis he encounters unless it is a fixed point in time and space. The imprecise nature of his travels is initially attributed to the age and unreliability of the TARDIS's navigation system. However, the 1969 serial The War Games, the 2009 special Planet of the Dead, as well as the 2010 finale The Big Bang reveals that the Doctor actually stole the TARDIS. He was presumably unfamiliar with its systems but was able to operate it correctly until his exile when the Time Lords wiped it from his memory. After his trial and exile to twentieth century Earth, the Doctor still visits other planets on missions from the Time Lords who pilot the TARDIS to precise locations for him. After his exile is lifted, the Doctor returns to his travels and demonstrates the ability to reach a destination of his own choosing more often than not. In "Journey's End", the Doctor states that the reason for the previous bumpy navigation was that the TARDIS is meant to have six pilots and it is also stated in "The Time of Angels" that the Doctor pilots the TARDIS with the brakes on (hence the classic noise). The Doctor generally travels with one or more companions. Most of these make a conscious decision to travel with him, but others, especially early in the series, are accidental passengers.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Regeneration: When a Time Lord is dying - either due to old age or mortal injury - they are able to use a process called regeneration. Regeneration is a process in which all the cells in the body are replaced with new ones, with the ultimate result being the Time Lord having a completely new appearance. Even though the Doctor has changed numerous times, he still remains the same person inside and remains a force for good, if neutral, even though his priorities, personality and memories sometimes change, due to the fact that regeneration alters his brain chemistry as well. The regeneration process has been portrayed as either a simple fade between two incarnations, a glowing effect that revealed the next incarnation, or one incarnation morphing into the next. In recent portrayals, it has been portrayed as the incarnation generating or radiating a gold, orange or even white fire-like energy while transforming into the next incarnation. Oftentimes, the regeneration energy manifests in an explosive discharge which could damage or destroy anything or anyone around it. The brunt of the discharge is directed through the hands and head and could be made more powerful and violent if more energy was built up through stalling the process, further accompanied by a powerful shockwave if a new set of regenerations was given. The Doctor has been able to generate this regeneration energy at will in fiery wisps or as a yellow light, using it to heal non-life-threatening injuries and somewhat stall certain terminal conditions. However, all Time Lords have a finite amount of this energy, which means using it in this manner could be lessen the ability to regenerate. Eventually, the Doctor will lose the ability to regenerate after twelve or thirteen regenerations and incarnations, though he was later given a new set of regenerations by the Time Lords, the process of which caused a giant discharge of regeneration energy and a shockwave that expanded several miles. The regeneration process could also cause a brief period of emotion or mental instability, erratic behavior, mood swings, random spasms, lack of motor skills, confusion, memory loss, and unconsciousness, which is called "regeneration trauma". This period lasted for hours and also allowed the Doctor temporary abilities, such as a healing factor and superhuman strength, though which ability he receives is highly random. However, some regenerations happen without any period of trauma, such as the Eighth Doctor's transformation into the War Doctor.
  • Superhuman Intelligence: The Doctor is vastly more intelligent than most beings in the universe. He has an almost universal knowledge of nearly every species in the universe and has learned many skills from traveling throughout human and alien history. The Doctor is an expert on technology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, history, non-human biology, genetics and nearly every field of science (except ironically human medicine, as he is says he is not a medical doctor). He has created advanced scientific equipment out of ordinary junk and improvised strategic plans to save whole planets and the universe in short amounts of time. The Doctor has used deception, manipulation, and trickery to outsmart his enemies all his lives.
  • Omnilingualism: He is able to speak and understand virtually every language in existence. Although his ship, the TARDIS, is said to translate for his companions, the Doctor possesses this ability on his own. He can even communicate with some animals, such as cats and even dinosaurs.
  • Skilled Combatant: The Doctor is an expert fighter skilled in marksmanship, and martial arts (especially Venusian Akido. The Doctor can use Venusian Aikido, a form of martial art that employs pressure points) from having picked up these skills as a time-traveler, although he rarely uses them and would rather solve things peacefully or outsmart his enemies instead.
  • Superhuman Strength: He possess above-average strength, as he once broke down steel doors, chopped a brick in half and ripped a stone arm off a statue. This appears to be a random occurrence and an immediate after-effect of his regeneration, as such abilities only last 15 hours after the occurrence. However, some incarnations of the Doctor have demonstrated above-average strength in his adventures when necessary.
  • Superhuman Senses: He is capable of sensing time disturbances and perceiving all possible timelines, as well as having senses attuned to gravity, spatial location, and acceleration/speed. The Doctor further has enhanced smell (sharp enough to identify the atmospheric composition), taste (can identify an age and chemical composition of an object by licking), hearing, and eyesight (can read a name-tag from several hundred yards away, as well as see in the night like a cat, he is able to play a record of what he sees, for a better idea of the situation and to see what he has overlooked) that is superior to humans. He is stated to be able to feel a planet's rotations while on it.
  • Superhuman Durability: While the level of his durability is undefined, he has been able to survive harsh conditions which include (but not limited to), the low-pressure and coldness of space without a suit (though he still needs air), subzero temperatures (according to the Doctor at least -328 degrees Fahrenheit), extreme heats of at least 525 degrees Fahrenheit, multiple electric shocks, X-ray radiation, and falls from hundreds of feet , though the Fourth Doctor was injured by such fall to the point where he regenerated into his Fifth incarnation. He is also more resilient to radiation, allowing him to be barely harmed by an x-ray machine's radiation, though it was 500,000 rads of radiation bolt was what caused the Tenth Doctor to regenerate into the Eleventh in what seemed to be hours after exposure. He is immune to alcohol or wine. Normal sleep-inducing drugs take twice as long to take their effect on him as it does a normal human being and are not able to keep him asleep for long.
  • Enhanced Lung Capacity: The Doctor has two hearts from being a Time Lord. His alien respiratory system allows him to hold his breath for 20 minutes, remain buoyant in water, and survive strangulation. His body also has lower need for oxygen and can handle high levels of carbon dioxide that would kill a human. He can even hold his breath in the vacuum of space and survive without a suit for some time.
  • Superhuman Endurance: Needs only an hour of sleep a day, and tires much less than a human.
  • Superhuman Speed: Is stated by the Doctor himself to have reflexes ten times faster than a human being. This is proven when he was able to move across a giant spinning fan. The Doctor has spent much of his adventures running away and dodging enemy weaponry while surviving unscathed.
  • Superhuman Healing: Besides regeneration, Time Lords heal much faster than humans, as well as a special ability to go into a healing coma which accelerates the healing process even faster. In the span of 15 hours after regeneration (according to the Doctor), he can regrow entire body parts and be seemingly immune to crippling pain. While the regeneration process started, other minor injuries can heal instantly.
  • Psychometric Telepathy: The Doctor is capable of using telepathy and related psychic abilities (e.g. memory control and hypnosis), via physical contact, usually by touching a person's head. He once used a headbutt to make a man named Craig know about his alien origins and incarnations instantly. He is highly resistant to psychic attacks, possession, and other effects targeting his mind. His psychic senses allowed him to use a telepathic satellite network to channel all of humanities hope when they all spoke and thought his name at the same time, resulting in him being able to recover completely from being aged into a old man and then into a deformed and diminutive creature. While using this accumulated psychic energy, he was glowing with a fiery blue aura that shielded him from energy bolts, allowed him to make the cage he was locked in vanish, made him able to fly and levitate, and even telekinetically disarm an opponent. However, he only had these powers for a few minutes before returning to normal.
  • Temporal Resistance: The Doctor is naturally resistant to changes in space-time from being a Time Lord. He is able to retain memories of prior timelines, remember people and events who were erased from history, move in slowed or frozen time, has resistant to time-manipulation abilities, and be able to survive if anything happens that changes his personal history or past incarnations. He is also resistant to temporal disturbances, especially if he is at the epicenter of this change, such as when his supposed death at Lake Silencio was averted and all of reality began to collapse.
  • Longevity: The Second Doctor stated that Time Lords can "live forever, barring accidents." Thanks to regeneration and his own natural longevity, the Doctor has lived for many centuries—his first incarnation alone existed for over 450 years. Time Lords, in general consider 700 years to be middle ages, though its unknown if that is for just one incarnation or their entire lives. By the time of the Seventh Doctor he has stated he is approximately 956 years old. However, the Ninth Doctor he says he has forgotten his age and restarts from 900 years, while the Eleventh Doctor guessed that he was 1,200, though he also said he had forgotten. By the time he has regenerated into the Twelfth Doctor he can be estimated to be at least 2,000 years old, if not older.
  • The TARDIS:The Doctor's time-machine that he stole from Gallifrey to travel with ever since his first incarnation, with the name standing for "Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space". Although it takes the form of a British police public call box, the TARDIS is a highly advanced sentient alien spacecraft that is bigger on the inside due to being constructed from Time Lord dimensional transcendence science. The Doctor shares an unbreakable bond with the TARDIS and considers it to be his closest companion in all his incarnations.
  • Sonic Screwdriver: A multi-purpose tool that allows him to, power-up, hack into, repair, open, destroy/disable various things.
  • Psychic Paper: A blank piece of paper that he shows to others to show them whatever he wants them to believe who he is. This can also be used on machinery too.
  • Shades: The Doctor has had shades that have infrared/thermal imaging, as well as “Sonic Glasses” that are capable of the same abilities as a sonic screwdriver.
  • Unbreakable Chains: The Doctor can bind his foes with chains that were forged in the heart of a dwarf star.
  • TARDIS Key: A key that can be used to summon the TARDIS around himself. If the TARDIS is removed from the deactivated and removed from Space-Time, the Doctor could bring it back with enough power.
  • Matter condensation: A technique used by the Master (the technique was also learnt by the Doctor) which can shrink someone to death.
  • Explosives: Used explosives to blow up a relay device that damaged a department store.
  • Anti-Plastic: Used to defeat the Nestene Consciousness.
  • Space-Time Phone Calls: The Doctor is able to upgrade the phones of his/her companions so they can make calls through time and space.
  • Binoculars: Futuristic looking binoculars to help him/her see longer distances.
  • Sonic earmuffs: Blocked out any noise as well as any telepathic attacks.
  • Species matcher: Identifies the species/race of an individual. Can also detect invisible beings.
  • The writer's block: A stasis jail cell made by the Doctor.
  • Chronodyne generator: Small devices that can be used to accelerate time around a user sending them billions of years into the future.
  • Memory Dump: The Doctor can instantly download or upload any information he likes with a headbutt, which he considers to be vastly unpleasant. Considering this is the doctor's mind, this could be a potentially devastating technique as humans can't handle a Gallifreyan's psyche very well.
  • TARDIS homing watch: Can be used to locate a TARDIS.
  • Invisibility watch: A device that allowed the Doctor to turn invisible. The Doctor could also sense when it was being used.
  • Increased gravity stabiliser: A device that was capable of resisting the force of tornadoes.
  • 2Dis: A device that can turn 2-D objects, back to their original 3-D state.
  • Stattenheim remote control: A device that was capable of controlling TARDIS' remotely.
  • Imagineum: Can turn light into matter and create duplicates of beings. The Doctor once used it to duplicate the Celestial Toymaker.
  • Metaphysical engine: Allows the user to travel into the minds or thoughts of individuals, groups of people, as well as beliefs and imaginations.
  • Magic box: This device could alter the size of an object as well as emitting a heat ray.
  • Time flow analog: A device that can disrupt time travel devices.
  • Amaranth: A device created by the Time Lords to find unstable or discontinuous elements of the universe and to rebuild them along more rational lines, such as the established laws of the Spiral Politic.
  • De-mat Gun: A weapon that when fired, erases the enemy from all of reality. Its weakness is that after one shot it destroys the gun, because it is so powerful. Also requires the Great Key of Rassilon to arm it (although during the Time War, many were produced). The Doctor later modified the De-mat Gun so it could remove millions from time and space at once, can also be used to sealing the Medusa Cascade.
  • Chronic tripwire: Can be used to accelerate evolution so much to the point beings become dust.
  • Psilent songbox: Can banish Cyclors, a higher-dimensional race that was stated to be "functionally omnipotent", to higher dimensions. When it reacted to a time paradox, the Songbox was also able to cause a complete "chronal meltdown", which collapsed all possibilities, past, future, and timelines together. And when the Songbox reacted with the Chronal tumour inside the TARDIS, it turned into a temporal bomb, which could warp the reality and space-time of everything it touched, including the Cyclors.
  • Time Ring: A device that allowed for time-travel.
  • Personal reality warp: Created a parallel dimension based on what the person was recently experiencing.
  • Hand of Omega: Capable of altering a star's life cycle and able to turn them into a supernova. Was also capable of enhancing weapons.
  • Axumillary Orb: A weapon that was capable of pulverising an entire planet.
  • Armageddon Sapphire: Was capable of restarting a new universe as well as tearing reality apart causing damage to the Six-Fold realm.
  • The Moment: [A questionably Nigh Omniscient superweapon that can summon every incarnation of the Doctor (Past, Present, and Future) as well as being capable of destroying everything inside the Time-War.
  • Delta Wave: With prep time, depending on the equipment accessible, he can broadcast a wave that will from put to sleep to kill anyone with an organic brain. The range can go from personal to at least planetary.
  • De-mesmeriser: Can nullify the effects of Mind Control and Perception Manipulation.
  • Space-Time Vortex Crystal: Can summon a time storm from the Space-Time Vortex which swept away the Eternals' powers.

Weaknesses[]

  • Is unwilling to change fixed points in history (Although sometimes he has ignored this).
  • Generally hates using guns.
  • Burning out both his hearts will stop him from regenerating, as well as killing him before he can finish regenerating (He also has a finite, albeit unknown and likely very large, limit to his number of regenerations).
  • The Sonic Screwdriver doesn’t work on wood or anything with a deadlock seal.
  • The poison in the Judas Tree prevents him from regenerating and can kill him in at least 32 minutes.
  • The Glory refuses to give its wielder "immortality".
