Son Goku

, known as Son Goku (孫 悟空?) is the protagonist of the manga and anime series Dragon Ball.

In Dragon Ball, Goku trains himself in various martial arts and searches the planet for the seven Dragon Balls. He meets other characters with similar goals, such as Bulma, with whom Goku travels to find the Dragon Balls. As Goku matures, he becomes one of Earth's strongest warriors and protects it from villains who wish to harm it. Goku is depicted as carefree and aloof when at ease but quickly serious when fighting. Goku is able to concentrate his chi and use it for energy-based attacks, the most prominent being his signature Kamehameha wave, in which Goku launches a blue energy blast from his hands.

As the protagonist, Goku appears in most of the episodes, films, television specials, and OVAs of the anime series Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball Z Kai, as well as many of the franchise's video games. Due to the series' international popularity, Goku has become one of the most recognizable and iconic anime characters. Outside the Dragon Ball franchise, Goku has made cameo appearances in Toriyama's self-parody series Neko Majin Z, has been the subject of other parodies, and has appeared in special events.

Western countries were introduced to the version of Goku appearing in the Dragon Ball Z anime, an adaptation of Dragon Ball Volumes 17-42, as opposed to his initial child form, which Japan was first introduced to.

Goku is known for his cheerful, energetic personality and his love of competition (specifically sport fighting and eating). He has remarkable intuition at seeing the good in others in spite of their actions, though his capacity for forgiving his enemies has occasionally been criticized as excessive; Goku, for the most part, only fights to win, and spares his enemies after defeating them only for them to attack him when his back is turned. Goku will not hesistate to fight back. His staggering power is simultaneously reined in and enhanced by his fierce loyalty and morality. Goku can also be very blunt, and not afraid to express his opinion in a discussion, such as when he questioned Krillin's marriage to Android 18. Despite his kind-hearted nature, Goku can feel incredible anger in cases of extreme turmoil, such as the death of a close friend/relative, or when someone murders many innocents needlessly. He has a simple, practical view of the world and is somewhat naive to the world around him. Because of this, many characters incorrectly assume him to be somewhat stupid, although once he has a basic understanding of things, he learns very quickly. His most remarkable ability is his will to succeed, his tenacity and persistence. He is always determined to push himself beyond his limitations, and never give up even when the odds are stacked against him.

Goku is pure of heart, possessing no negative feelings or thoughts. He is also portrayed to be very innocent as a child, because of growing up in Mount Paozu and not having met anyone other than his grandpa until he meets Bulma. During his childhood, a recurring gag early in the series is that he is incapable of telling the difference between a male and a female without physically touching them, which often gets him into trouble.[Goku is pure of heart, possessing no negative feelings or thoughts. At first, Goku did not take the fact of being a Saiyan well when he learned from his brother Raditz of what they do such as killing innocent alien races and selling their planets. He intially believed them to be vicious and selfish killers. Later on during the Frieza Saga, he learns from his dying archenemy/rival Vegeta (Prince of the Saiyans) that Frieza destroyed their homeworld, killing most of the Saiyans including both Goku's family and Vegeta's father, the King. This revealation made Goku realize that Vegeta and the other Saiyans did cruel things because Frieza forced them to. It's at that moment Goku fully embraces his Saiyan heritage and declares he will defeat Frieza and avenge the Saiyans and all other races that Frieza's killed.

Early LifeEdit

Goku was one of the last of the aliens known as Saiyins (or Saiyajin in the original Japanese) in the universe,  As all Saiyins are sent as children to other words to take them over by the time they are of age, Goku was expected to conquer the Earth over the course of his life.  The pod that he was sent in was to provide him with his mission was destroyed on landing and so the information that was supposed to allow Goku to rule the world was lost.  Goku was later discovered by an aging martial arts master named Gohan, who raised the boy as his grandson.  Though the boy was violent and wild at first, after getting a bump on the head Goku became much more well behaved and he and Gohan grew very close.  Goku was trained in the martial arts and with his inhuman strength proved to be very formidable, though he was never able to defeat Gohan in sparring matches.

At one point, Gohan learned that when Goku sees a full moon, he transforms into a giant monkey-like monster with huge destructive power.  After that he told Goku never to look at a full moon.  Later Goku would change once more and killed Gohan, though he would never discover the truth.  After that, Goku lived alone in the mountains, talking to his grandpa with he personified as Gohan's prized possession, a completely round jewel.

The Quest for the Dragon BallsEdit

Later on, Goku adjusted to living on his own when he met a young girl named Bulma, who was looking for something called a Dragon Ball.  Bulma later revealed that Goku's "grandpa" was. in fact, a Dragon Ball and if seven of them where assembled, they would grant a single wish and asked for it.  Goku was reluctant to give it up, but decided to travel with her in order to finish her quest, not realizing that once the wish is granted, the Dragon Balls are scattered across the four corners of the Earth and are hidden as rocks for a full year.

As the duo began their quest, Goku stumbled across a turtle and promised to carry him to the sea (as he was a long way from home).  After delivering him to the sea, he promised to return the favour and swam out to the sea, returning some time with an old man who identified himself as the Turtle Hermit (Kami in English version of the anime).  He gifted Goku with a small magical cloud that only the pure of heart could ride that could allow him to travel faster than on foot.  After Bulma also discovered that he had a Dragon Ball, they bargained for it (using the Turtle Hermit's perverted desires to win him over) and continued on their way.

Next they found a town under threat of a giant monster.  In return for the town's dragonball, Goku defeats the monster, who is revealed as a weak, shapeshifting pig, who ended up joining them on their adventure.  After that, Goku and his friends journeyed into the desert and found the desert bandits Yamcha and Puar, who sought the Dragonballs to help Yamcha overcome his fear of women.  Luckily, that same fear and Goku's strength kept them at bay, though they continued to follow them in the hopes an opportunity may arise.

Goku, then encountered the Ox King and his daughter Chi Chi and ended up accidentally proposing to Chi Chi, unaware of what marriage is.  In this adventure, he also observes the Turtle Hermit perform an ability called the Kameha Meha and learns to do it for himself, simply by watching, thus demonstrating his inherit fighting ability.  Soon they move into the next stage of their search, unaware that they are being watched by a mad "Emperor" Pilaf (though Pilaf seemed to only have two subjects and a castle).

Special AblitiesEdit

Through constant training, Goku has achieved many extraordinary abilities, like incredible superhuman strength and durability. He also possesses super speed[36] and swift reflexes, and can perform energy blasts formed from ki. As a child, Goku wields the Nyoi-bo (如意棒 lit. "Mind Stick"?, renamed "Power Pole" in Funimation's anime dub), a magic staff that extends and retracts on command, given to him by Grandpa Gohan;[6] but as he grows older and stronger, Goku eventually stops using the staff. Goku's first means of conveyance is a magic cloud called Kinto-un (筋斗雲 lit. "Somersault Cloud"?, renamed "Nimbus" in Funimation's dub), given to him by Master Roshi in return for saving Roshi's pet sea turtle.[37] After training with Kami, he learns to fly by virtue of the technique Bukū-jutsu (舞空術 lit. "Air Dance Technique"?) and uses the cloud less frequently.

Goku's signature move is the Kamehameha (かめはめ波 lit. "Kamehame Wave"?), an energy blast technique learned from Master Roshi.[38] Another notable technique of Goku's, taught to him by King Kai, is the Kaiō-ken (界王拳 lit. "World King Fist"?), an attack that multiplies his chi and strength for an instant, but can also strain his body afterwards.[39] Goku's most powerful attack is the Genki Dama (元気玉 lit. "Good Spirit Ball"?, renamed "Spirit Bomb" in Funimation's dub), an energy sphere created by gathering ki from surrounding life forms, which he also learned from King Kai.[21] Goku also learns a teleportation skill called Shunkan Idō (瞬間移動 lit. "Instant Teleport"?, renamed "Instant Transmission" in Funimation's dub), which he learned from the inhabitants of the planet Yardrat.[40]

Goku is the only Saiyan in the series to achieve all known Saiyan transformations seen in the manga (except for Legendary Super Saiyan). In Dragon Ball, he can transform into a gigantic monkey-like creature called an Ōzaru (大猿 lit. "Great Monkey"?, renamed "Great Ape" or "Giant Ape" in Funimation's dub) when he stares at a full moon while possessing a Saiyan tail. Goku loses the ability to make this transformation when his friends cut off his tail.[41] Although it grows back, Goku's tail is later permanently removed by Kami.[42] In Dragon Ball GT, Goku is able to use this transformation again after regrowing his tail with the Elder Supreme Kai's help.[43] In Dragon Ball Z, Goku becomes the first Super Saiyan in a millennium in rage when Frieza kills Krillin on the planet Namek.[44] As the series progresses, Goku achieves every advanced form of Super Saiyan. Each transformation changes Goku's appearance and enormously enhances his abilities.

Goku can fuse with Vegeta, creating a warrior with the combined powers and skills of both Saiyans. He can achieve this using two methods. The first method involves using the Potara Earrings presented to Goku by the Elder Kai, which results in a 'perfect fusion', creating Vegito ("Vegerot" in Viz Media's manga translation).[45] The other method, appearing only in the anime, is by performing the Metamorese Fusion Dance, which creates Gogeta. If the dance is performed incorrectly, it forms the obese Veku.[46]
