The Green Lantern Corps are a universal police force in the DC Universe.
Origin[]
When the Guardians previous attempts to create their cosmic protectors failed, they created the Green Lantern Rings to find and recruit the bravest and most fearless people in the universe to protect their sector of space by giving them fantastic powers.
History[]
Before the Corps[]
Long ago on the overpopulated planet Maltus, a group of beings evolved into powerful immortals. The immortals migrated and settled on the planet Oa, near the center of the universe and the beings began calling themselves the Guardians of the Universe. Soon, one of their own, the scientist Krona, went mad an attempted an experiment with horrific consequences, and the fallout caused the schism within the Guardians on how to deal with these types of situations. Some Guardians left to create different factions with the intent of defending the universe with organizations such as the Dark Stars and the Zamarons (also known as Star Sapphires). The remaining Guardians created their first attempts at universal defense in the form of the Manhunters, robots of great power tasked with protecting the universe. However, the Manhunters soon became resentful of their place and proved themselves to dangerous, arguably due to their inability to feel fear, and they eventually rebelled against the Guardians. The Guardians defeated the Manhunters, robbing them of their power and scattering them across the universe.
Forming the Corps[]
The Guardians sought again to create their own agents of justice, this time deciding to choose pre-existing life forms from across the universe that possess strong will, a strong sense of justice and an ability to overcome fear. To this end, they created the Green Lantern and the Green Lantern rings, which tapped into a green energy that could be controlled by sheer will. Supposedly, the Lantern symbol has a connection to what is thought to be the first intelligent life in the form of an entity on an unnamed foggy world that held a lantern to light the way.
When the Guardians initially formed the Green Lantern Corps, it only consisted of about a dozen or so members, though over time, the numbers grew. The numbers grew radically when the Lantern Raker Qarrigat encountered Darkseid, evil god and ruler of the planet Apokalyps and after failing to defeat him, returned to Oa and convinced the Guardians of the seriousness of Darkseid's threat and asked them to expand the ranks considerably. Eventually, the number grew to 3600 Lanterns, one for each sector of space.
The Crisis[]
The Anti-Monitor, the ruler of the anti-matter universe, attempted to destroy the multiverse but was eventually defeated by the mightiest heroes in the universe at a great cost. The Guardians' failure to prevent the threat resulted in them deciding to leave Oa to reunite with their female counterparts, the Zamarons.
