The Guardians of the Galaxy are the name of several superhero teams in the Marvel Universe, the most recent team being made up of various space-faring superheroes.
Origin[]
The Guardians were originally formed by a disparate group of space-faring heroes looking to fight against the alien hive mind known as the Phalanx. After they defeated them, they stayed together to bring justice to the galaxy.
History[]
The Guardians of the Galaxy was formed following the defeat of the attempted conquest of the star system controlled by the alien race known as the Kree by the alien race known as the Phalanx. Seeing the need for a team to prevent such crises, the hero Star-Lord formed the team from heroes who battled the Phalanx, as well as many who had opposed the evil entity Annihilus and his attempted incursion of our universe.
On the recommendation of ally Nova, the group established a base of operations at the space station Knowhere, which possessed a teleportation system with near-universal range. An intelligent, super-powered dog called Cosmo acts as Knowhere's chief of security and worked closely with the new team.
After an initial clash with the revitalized Universal Church of Truth, the team's investigation of a mass of "Limbo ice" revealed a semi-amnesiac man who identified himself as Vance Astrovik (who was, in fact, the superhero Major Victory). Astro's declaration inspired the as-yet-unnamed team to adopt the "Guardians of the Galaxy" name for their own.
The team then battled the Universal Church of Truth once again, while Astro was attacked aboard Knowhere by an incarnation of his former teammate Starhawk. Matters worsened when the alien shapeshifting Skrulls apparently infiltrated Knowhere, and the revelation that Star-Lord directed Mantis, a powerful empath, to telepathically coerce the heroes into joining the team.
The War of Kings[]
With the team feeling they could not trust each other, the team split into various groups to investigate different threats. Gamora went with her old friend Adam Warlock to investigate the Universal Church of Truth, Drax and hero Phyla-Vell went to investigate a missing comrade, Star-Lord went to gain assistance from the Kree and Rocket Raccoon continued the team's mission of defending the galaxy. To this end, Rocket recruited new members including microverse denizen Bug, former alien invader Groot, Mantis and the time-displaced Major Victory.
