John Constantine is a fictional superhero/antihero in the DC Universe.  In his original stories, though connected to the DC Universe, had him working with heroes but over time his comic moved away from superhero fiction, making him more of a horror and dark crime-focused character with mostly passing references to other superhero-related characters.  Many of his stories following Hellblazer #66 are considered to be in a continuity separate from the mainstream DC Universe.  He would re-enter the DC Universe following the establishment of the New 52.

Origin[]

John Constantine came from a long line of magicians and eventually followed his family business, albeit in his own cynical fashion.

Biography[]

John Constantine was born in Liverpool, England to his father Thomas Constantine and his mother Mary Anne Quinn on May 10, 1953. While in the womb, the yet unborn John strangled his twin brother to death in the womb with an umbilical cord, causing him to be stillborn. Mary Anne died during childbirth, due to complications from a previous abortion Thomas forced on her. Thomas, unable to accept his role in her death, blamed John and the two lived together harbouring deep resentment toward each other. John was raised alongside his older sister, Cheryl with Thomas as an abusive, alcoholic father and was eventually arrested for stealing a woman's underpants.
