It is a three-headed dragon kaiju created by Toho that first appeared in the 1964 Godzilla film Ghidorah The Three headed Monster. He is known for being the arch enemy of Godzilla.

Name [edit | edit source]

King Ghidorah's name is made up of "King" (キ ン グ?) And "Ghidorah." The "Ghidorah" part of the King Ghidorah name comes from the Japanese word for "hydra" (ヒ ド ラ?, Hidora), which is spelled very similarly to the Japanese katakana for Ghidorah.

King Ghidorah was referred to as "Ghidrah" or "Ghidorah" in the American versions of his first three movies, Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro-Monster and Destroy All Monsters, because it sounded more like "hydra". He is not known as "King Ghidorah" in an original American version of one of his movies until Godzilla vs. Gigan.

In Godzilla, Mothra and king ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out attack, the guardian monster named Ghidorah is spelled in kanji but pronounced the same: 魏 怒 羅? (Gidora).

Appearance [edit | edit source]

King Ghidorah is a golden dragon monster with two legs, three heads on the long neck, giant bat wings, and two tails. King Ghidorah's multiple heads were inspired by Yamata no Orochi, an eight-headed dragon from Japanese mythology. King Ghidorah was brought to life on the movie screen by a stunt actor inside an elaborate three-piece suit, with a team of puppeteers to control many appendages of the suit. Its design was primarily created by Eiji Tsuburaya based on a minimal script description: "It has three heads, two tails, and a voice like a bell."

Personality [edit | edit source]

King Ghidorah does not have much of a developed personality as he is under someone's control in most of his appearances. The only times he was not under mind control throughout most of the movie were Ghidorah, The three headed Monster, Rebirth of MothraIy Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. He was temporarily free of mind control in the Invasion of Astro-Monster and Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, where, in the former, he fled Godzilla and Rodan in fear and probably from being overwhelmed, and in the latter, he was greatly confused. to what was happening and was almost killed by Godzilla. It seems that each of the King Ghidorah heads can think for themselves separately, although the middle head seems to be dominant. In Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster, King Ghidorah was said to be evil, and he destroyed civilizations on various planets for unknown reasons. He tried to destroy Earth and its civilizations, but he fought the three monsters that got in his way and finally retired. In Rebirth of Mothra III, King Ghidorah caused the extinction of the dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous period, and then returned to Earth today to feed on humanity. In Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack King Ghidorah is one of the guardian monsters, being the God of Heaven. King Ghidorah was a protector of Japan, making Ghidorah the protagonist of the first, and so far, only time.

Origins [edit | edit source]

King Ghidorah has a different origin in each series.

In the Showa series, King Ghidorah is said to have attacked Venus by his own feet for many thousands of years, wiping out all of the planet's civilization. He then attacked Earth, but was repelled by Earth monsters. At some point, he was taken over by the Xiliens and used as a pawn in his invasion of Earth. King Ghidorah was meant to be taken control of different alien races, losing their history along the way. The Garogas later claimed to have created King Ghidorah, but whether this is true or not is never final, he explained, given the monster's ancient history.

In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, King Ghidorah is the result of the merger of 3 Dorats due to an atomic bomb that fell on Lagos Island, which was the island where the original Godzillasaurus was mutated. The Dorats were put on the island by the Futurians.

In Rebirth of Mothra III, King Ghidorah came to Earth millions of years ago and caused the Cretaceous mass extinction. He returned to Earth in the present in order to feed on humans, especially children.

In the Millennium series, King Ghidorah was an eight-headed serpent god, or Yamata no Orochi, who was awakened prematurely before he could grow his eight heads, instead only three grew, but then eventually later he regains his true shape.
