Dick Grayson aka Nightwing (formerly Robin) is a superhero in the DC Universe and the first sidekick to Batman .

Origin

Richard Grayson was once a circus acrobat along with his parents, until they were murdered by a criminal who sabotaged their act. Dick was soon taken in by Bruce Wayne, who sympathized with his plight and revealed that he was actually Batman, a superhero. Bruce trained Dick to fight crime as his ally and protege, Robin. Later, as Richard grew up and became his own man, he dropped the Robin identity and chose a new one: Nightwing.

Biography

• Note that the Golden Age version of Dick Grayson was later relegated to Earth-Two (along with many other Golden Age superheroes), an alternate universe containing Golden Age characters who aged in real time. In the Silver Age, a different Dick Grayson appeared with an extremely similar backstory.

Golden Age (Earth-Two)

Born in 1928, Richard "Dick" Grayson was the son of Mary and John Grayson, an acrobat act known as the Flying Graysons.  When he was old enough, Dick was trained in acrobatics and joined his parents act as a trapeze artist. While in Gotham City, the Circus found itself under pressure from mob boss Tony Zucco to pay protection money. The circus refused to pay and in retaliation had the safety nets and trapeze ropes sabotaged for the Flying Grayson act. Mary and John died, leaving Dick an orphan. Millionaire Bruce Wayne, who was similarly orphaned by criminals and witnessed their deaths, decided to adopt Dick as his ward.

Wayne decided to teach his new ward martial arts and fighting both to channel his anger at Zucco (who Dick realized was responsible) and to make sure he could defend himself from him should Zucco come after him.
