Hollis Mason was the first superhero to use the name Nite Owl.

Origin

A police officer who was inspired by Action Comics and the vigilante known as Hooded Justice, Hollis Mason felt he could do good as a costumed crime fighter and trained to the best of his ability as Nite Owl.

Biography

Hollis Mason was born in 1916 and when Hollis was 12, his father moved the family from their farm to New York City where he began working at Moe Vernon's Auto Repairs.

By 1938, Mason had become a policeman who had made the decision to lead a double life as a masked vigilante after reading both Action Comics #1 (which included the first appearance of Superman) and the exploits of the vigilante known as Hooded Justice who had been in the news at the time. Before becoming a crime fighter, Mason dedicated himself to working out at the police gym as much as possible and going to bed and getting up early, which caused his friends to give him the ironic nickname "Nite Owl".

Hollis started wearing his costume under his police uniform and eventually used the Nite Owl identity to fight crime. In his first patrol, he was present for a police operation, where he saw the Hooded Justice defeat a group of murderers.  He also had an unsuccessful fight with a drunk, which resulted in him being humiliated, though he realized how to improve his costume in practical ways.  His second outing as Nite Owl, in which he defeated a team of armed robbers singlehandedly, gained him notable notoriety and fame (thanks, in no small part, to the increased popularity of crime fighters such as the Hooded Justice).

Dan Dreiberg

He is the second Nite Owl and joined the Crimebusters and Watchmen team.
