The Punisher (Frank Castle) is an antihero vigilante in the Marvel Universe. He is one of the most iconic antihero comic characters and is well-known for his goal to kill as many criminals as he can.

A Vietnam veteran, Frank Castle was ready for a quiet life with his family until his wife and children were murdered by gangsters. Frank made it his life's mission to make criminals pay with their lives as The Punisher.

Early Life and Military Career[]

Born Francis Castiglione, Frank Castle grew up in Queens, New York. At one point, Frank met a woman named Maria, whom he would eventually marry. Soon after their marriage, Maria was pregnant with their first child, right before Frank Castle enlisted in United States Marine Corps. Frank Castle went on to graduate from boot camp and the United States Marine Corps School of Infantry, and during this time he met a Native American scout named Phan Bighawk, who trained Frank in the art of wilderness survival.

Once his training was complete, he was sent to Vietnam, where he acted as a point man for a special operations unit. He fought well in numerous engagements and gained exceptional skills through his experiences. In 1971, when he was stationed in the Valley Force Firebase, the base was assaulted by Viet Cong forces and at the battle's end, the only survivor on either side was Francis Castiglione. Francis became a heavily decorated soldier, having been awarded 4 Purple Hearts, 3 Silver Stars, 3 Bronze Stars, the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. When Francis completed his second tour of duty in Vietnam, he returned home and had a second child with his wife and became focused on being a dedicated family man.

Francis later re-enlisted for a third tour of duty for the U.S., this time illegally under the name Frank Castle and eventually spent a total of four years fighting in Vietnam. Castle served a total of four years (1968-1971) in Vietnam and five years after (1976), he organized Black Ops training missions for the Marine Recon Commandos in the Upper New York state area.

Death of his Family[]

When Frank Castle was on leave, he took his wife and children to Central Park in New York City, where they stumbled onto a mob killing on the Sheep's Meadow green.  When the mobsters saw they had been watched, they gunned down Frank's wife and children and only Frank was able to escape.  The incident damaged Frank's psyche in a deeply profound way and lefting him wanting to seek justice for his family's murder.  Frank assembled an arsenal of powerful, effective and cutting edge weapons and plotted to murder criminals to bring justice in a way the authorities could not.
