The Spider (Richard Wentworth) is a pulp hero in the 30's and 40's who appeared in a series of prose stories.

Origin[edit | edit source]

Richard Wentworth, in his college days, defended a friend from a criminal preying on him.  Years after, he decided to use his skills and influence to continue a similar war on criminals, using fear and manipulation to succeed in his goals.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Much of Richard Wentworth's past remains unrevealed.  What is known is that he's the last surviving member of his wealthy family.  At some point, he fought in World War I, rising to the rank of Major.  In addition, he seemed to have a strong urge to take the law into his own hands while in college.  When friend and teacher Professor Brownlee was framed by a sinister criminal, Wentworth exacted lethal vengeance on him, shooting him dead.  From then on, Richard decided to prey on criminals as a crime fighter. As a disguise in his vigilante mission, he initially took the guise of a hairy, fanged hunchback, calling himself the Spider.
