The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a superhero team from the comics of the same name and many animated adaptations.

It was created in November 1983 by Kevin Eastman-Peter Laird.

Origin

After being dumped into the sewer after being exposed to a powerful mutagen, four pet turtles were transformed into mutants and were trained by a mutated rat to be superior martial artists with a sense of justice.

History

The Beginning

In Japan in 1964, Splinter was the pet rat of skilled ninja Hamato Yoshi, a member of the Foot Clan, where (being an unusually smart rat) he learned ninja skills simply by watching his master. Hamato Yoshi and another clan member, Oroku Nagi, were rivals, particularly over the love of the Chinese woman Tang Shen. Though both tried to win her heart, only Yoshi was able to win it. Shen was later beaten brutally by Nagi, who insisted that she love him, and upon discovering this, Yoshi murdered Nagi for revenge. The Foot Clan then forced him to make a decision for his crime: exile or suicide. Yoshi chose exile and moved to New York City along with Splinter. Meanwhile, Nagi's brother Saki vowed revenge and joined the Foot Clan, rising in it's ranks and eventually becoming the leader of the American branch. He then wore an armor covered in blades and referred to himself as the Shredder. Eventually, Shredder found and murdered both Yoshi and Shen. After Yoshi was murdered by the Shredder, Splinter fled and after a time ended up in the sewers of New York City.

After a traffic accident caused four pet turtles and a container of radioactive ooze to fall into the sewer, both Splinter and the young turtles were mutated into humanoids with human-level intelligence. He raised them as his own children and taught them all he knew about being a ninja, including fighting, stealth, and strategy. He also named them after four Renaissance artists that Splinter found influential in his life: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michaelangelo.

Their first battles

When they turned 13, they decided to use their considerable fighting abilities to battle crime in New York City, emerging under cover of darkness, so as not to be discovered. Splinter later revealed his history to the Turtles and after watching them defeat the Purple Dragon street gang, he decides they were ready to battle the Shredder. They challenged the Shredder to a duel and after a pitched battle against him and his soldiers, defeating him after a pitched battle. They allowed him to live, but the Shredder tried to kill them with a thermite bomb, only to be knocked off the roof with the bomb, seemingly killing himself.

After the defeat of the Shredder, Raphael encountered a crazy vigilante named Casey Jones who attacks criminals with sports equipment.  Though Raphael disapproves of his rage, he begrugdingly teams up with him, forging an important (if often uneasy) alliance between Casey Jones and the Turtles.

On another occasion, the Turtles found themselves rescuing a woman named April O'Neil from the Mousers, small robots designed to catch rats and solve New York City's vermin problem. After taking April to their lair, she revealed that she was once the lab assistant to Baxter Stockman, the creator of the Mousers and that the Mousers were actually designed to rob banks and blackmail the city by threatening its infrastructure. April escaped Stockman after discovering his plan and she and the Turtles worked together to stop the machines and defeat Stockman. After the fight, April gave the teens her phone number and promised to help them out whenever they needed help.

Adventures in space

The turtles returned home from their adventure with the Mousers only to discover it almost destroyed and with no signs of Master Splinter. The Turtles hunt Splinter and discover he's been taken to the TCRI building (a company which produced the mutagen that transformed the Turtles and Splinter) by members of an alien race called the Utrom. During a fight between the Turtles and the Utrom, Donatello accidentally teleports the Turtles to another planet (Plebak), where they find themselves confronted by alien gunmen. The turtles battle and defeat the gunmen, unaware that they were after a small robot, the Fugitoid, that was standing in their midst the moment they arrived.

The Turtles battled their way out of the building they were in and quickly allied themselves with the Fugitoid. In doing so, they soon find themselves targeted by the evil General Blanque of the interplanetary government known simply as the Federation, as well as the dinosaur like creatures known as the Triceratons. The Triceratons eventually captured the Fugitoid during a brawl in an alien bar, but the Turtles gave hot pursuit. The Turtles eventually rescue the Fugitoid and escape, only to be followed by three Triceratons. Soon, they find themselves teleported once more to Earth and defeat the Triceratons.  There they meet the Utroms once more, who explain they had not kidnapped Splinter, but had actually taken him to heal after sustaining injuries from the Mousers in their previous adventure.  In fact, the Utroms had no interest in returning the Turtles to Earth, but Splinter convinced them otherwise.

The Utrom also reveal that they had created the mysterious ooze that mutated them.  Long ago the Utrom were stranded on Earth and created TCRI to secretly assimilate to the new planet and the accident that created the turtles occurred when they were moving their mutagenic ooze from their crashed ship to their new headquarters, the TCRI building.  Shortly after, the Utrom and the Fugitoid use the transmat to retreat, as the use of the transmat attracted too much attention.  The Turtles are eventually forced to do the same but the Fugitoid is able to send them to April's apartment.

Exile

After a few other adventures, Leonardo finds himself attacked by the Foot Clan while out on his own.  Beaten very badly, Leonardo accidentally leads the rest of the Foot Clan to April O'Neil's apartment, where the turtles have been staying.  Leonardo reveals that he was in fact attacked not only by the Foot Clan but also by the Shredder, who was thought to have died in battle with the Turtles.

Soon, the Turtles were attacked by the Foot Clan and were forced to fight their way to escape.  They are aided by Casey Jones, a mad vigilante Raphael had encountered on a solo adventure and eventually escape.  Feeling defeated, they headed to Massachusetts for sanctuary.  There, they hide out in Casey Jones family farm to heal their wounds, both physical and emotional.  While there, they also battled a survivalist terrorist group. After nearly a year in exile, the Turtles returned to New York to defeat the Shredder once and for all.  When Leonardo confronted the Shredder himself, Shredder revealed the circumstances of his return.  The remaining members of the Foot discovered the Shredder's remains and ressurected him using a combination of science and magic.  The Shredder's flesh was now a sentient colony of worms with one mind: the Shredder's.  The Turtles were able to kill the Shredder once more and burned his body to prevent any chance of his return.
