The Winter Guard is a Russian superhero team in the Marvel Universe.

Origin[edit | edit source]

Following the ending of the Soviet Union, the Soviet Super Soldiers disbanded, with many members reforming the team as the Winter Guard.

History[edit | edit source]

Falling the fall of the Soviet Union, the USSR's own superhero team, the Soviet Super Soldiers, were officially disbanded.  Russia soon created a new superhero team, the Winter Guard, with many former members of the Soviet Super Soldiers joining the new team.  In one of their earliest appearances they encountered Iron Man as he was attempting to defeat the Mandarin but declined to assist him. They also helped the Avengers save the Earth when it was turned into a maximum security prison for the human race and later assisted the Avengers when the time travelling supervillain Kang conquered the Earth.

Years later, while the alien race known as the Skrulls were secretly invading the Earth, the Winter Guard expanded, modelling itself after the 50 State Initiative, which looked to give each state its own superhero team.  Later, they encountered Doc Samson, She-Hulk and General "Thunderbolt" Ross who were investigating the murder of the supervillain The Abomination and are later informed two members (Red Guardian and Dark Star) who died previously had been replaced with members using the same names. The team also went onto gain a spaceship belonging to the hostile alien race known as the Dire Wraiths and converted it into a team base.

Later, they were attacked by the supervillain group known as the Intelligencia and were seemingly killed, though it was later revealed that they survived.

In the wake of Namor, king of the undersea kingdom of Atlantis, forming a team to drive humans from the oceans, Russia reformed a new Winter Guard team.  In addition to returning members Ursa Major and the Crimson Dynamo, the team was joined by new members; the android Vostok, the gods Perun and Chernobog and the mysterious Red Widow, a figure with connections to the espionage training organization The Red Room.  The team teamed up with the superhero team the Avengers to combat Namor's team, the Defenders of the Deep, but when Perun and Chernobog and She-Hulk began fighting, the two teams battled each other, allowing the Defenders of the Deep to escape.
